>>Ammonites are perhaps the most widely known fossil, possessing the typically ribbed spiral-form shell as pictured above. These creatures lived in the seas between 440 – 65 million years ago, when they became extinct along with the dinosaurs. Most ammonite shells are coiled, and all contain a series of linked chambers. The body of the ammonite was contained within the large final, open-ended section called the living or head chamber, from which the tentacles were extended to catch prey. The opening of the shell – called the aperture – was possibly covered by a protective shield that could shut to protect the ammonite from other predators.
Now extinct, the ammonite mollusk was a shelled cephalopod that existed in nature about 400 million years ago usually appearing in a coiled, spiral shape. The extinction of ammonites coincided with the extinction of dinosaurs. Ammonites inhabited the world’s oceans and now appear as fossils in marine rocks. Because of their rapid evolution and wide distribution, ammonite fossils provide a useful tool for indexing and dating rocks. It is said that the original discus used by the ancient Greeks in their Olympics was in fact a fossilized ammonite. In India, ammonite fossils are identified with the god Vishnu and are used in various ceremonies. They are mostly collected in Nepal, from the bed of the River Gandaki where it cuts through Jurassic sediments. These fossils are known as "shaligram shila". The word ammonite is derived from Ammon, an Egyptian god who took the form of a ram. It was prized by Egyptian and Roman societies because it was seen as a deity symbol. Fossils represent time, eternity and evolution. In general they are used as protective objects. They can be worn in jewelry to increase your natural defenses. Fossils of all kinds are worn as amulets to increase life span, due to their lineage.

Ammonites have a strong positive Earth energy to it, and is used in finding your way down the “spiritual spiral path” to the center where the God and Goddess await. It is also used in past life regression. In healing, ammonite will assist with general good health, stamina and high energy. It can help transmute negativity to smoothly flowing energy. It will also assist during childbirth and will be helpful for general survival skills. Ammonite can help release karmic debris and harmful thought patterns, while helping to attain and enhance personal power within the Self. This fossil is also helpful in releasing depression and finding purpose.
